Some have already returned. Who still enjoys the last weeks before the big return. After the summer and the holidays, there always comes the time of the infamous return to the school desks for children.
But there is a softer way to overcome it: play! Here, then, a few games to best address the back to school thanks to the advice Alessia Salzani, tagesmutter at the Cooperative
“It is good to face this delicate and particular moment by spending time together with your children, playing simple and stimulating games and perhaps asking for their help to label, bind books and exercise books and sharpen the pencils they will have in their case ” .
1) The vacation box
To make this game, you need to have a good memory and prepare the material already at the beginning of the holiday. We start by recycling a shoebox or a gift received: just have a lid. You can color it or decorate it with stickers, scraps, laces and so on and so forth: it will be this box that will become a treasure chest of memories!
During the summer holidays invite the child to collect and enclose inside the “chest” all the objects that will remind him of a place or a special moment spent together: for example, a stone found on a path; a shell has taken on the beach; the placemat of his favorite bar; the feather of a bird found on the road; the admission ticket to the adventure park where you have been together, and so on.
« Upon returning, the casket will open and we will try to reconstruct the history of our holidays through the collected objects. It will not be necessary to talk about every single object: it will be sufficient to take only the objects that will awaken in the child’s particular memories, linked to special sensations, which will stimulate him in and narrative ability”.
2) Shapes and colors
You can buy or cut the main geometric shapes (squares, circles, triangles, rectangles) from cards of different colors, as long as each shape has a single color and different dimensions (these are similar to those of the tangram). We start the game by asking the child to recognize and name the various shapes and colors and then start creating families.
« The child, even without particular invitations, will start by itself to create logical groupings by shape, color, and size. Depending on age and class, you can also ask him to do sets of figures that have the same number of angles or sides or make sequences(from the smallest to the largest, from the figures that have more sides to those with fewer sides and so on)».
3) Word games
Prepare small squares of cardboard (5x5cm or for the smaller 10×10 cm) with the syllables of the alphabet, for example, BA, BE, BI, BO, BU and so for all the other consonants of the alphabet. Those who begin and draw all the pieces uncovered on the table are drawn. In turn, everyone must form a complete word. The winner is the one who composes the most and the one who composes the longest one, which is with more syllables.
« When you think of going back to school and homework, you always think about linguistic and logical-mathematical skills … but what happened to the famous autonomies? Cut alone, pour the water from the jug, tie the apron, rebuild your backpack and … tie the strings of the shoes? Learning to do so remains a must for children, especially those who are preparing to take 6-7 years. So what more useful game than training in the form of a timed competition with strings? »
A shoebox is recycled and on the lid, there are two rows of holes in which the strings are passed and the child can train himself to knot, bow and double heel. « It is a game of precision and then as the days go by it also becomes a game of speed that your back, that of the teacher and the self-esteem of your child will enjoy ».
5) Memory in English
Why not take advantage of the last days of vacation to revise some English? This game is possible with anything else (animals, food, flags, etc.), but the simplest version to prepare is without a doubt that with colors.
« Many pieces are cut from the card and couples are formed in this way: a card will be colored with color and its partner will have written above the English name of the color to which it is combined. In this way, the child is trained to recognize not only the color but also the graphic sign of its corresponding name. And so on to those who collect more couples! »
